The first person you need know about is John Lennon.
Most famous as one half of the songwriting duo Lennon/McCartney, John Lennon was not only known for his time with the Beatles as he was without them. The essential Beatles songs that you should listen to that are written by Lennon include-

Born October 9th 1940, Lennon was the oldest of the Beatles and would ultimately be the first to go. Raised by his aunt Mimi from an early age, Lennon had a very active imagination and loved books by Lewis Carroll and drawing cartoons. At the age of fifteen he heard his first Elvis Presley song and was inspired to learn to play the guitar. On July 6, 1957 he was introduced to a young Paul McCartney who was attending a gig for Lennon's band the Quarrymen which he would soon join. McCartney and Lennon were a dynamic duo, both using the death of their mothers as inspiration to write songs for the rest of their lifetimes ("Julia" for Lennon and "Let it Be" for McCartney) Lennon was soon introduced to George Harrison via Paul McCartney and 3/4 of what was to become the Beatles was now formed.
That was just an early history of Lennon's life. He would go on to be publicly chastised for comments about the Beatles being "more popular than Jesus", marry Cynthia Powell with whom he had a son-Julian Lennon, write hundreds of songs, marry Yoko Ono, become world known for his wanting of world peace.
Perhaps the one thing that truly stands out among his legacy, would be the lyrics to "Imagine"
Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace
You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world
